Efficient Lighting Systems Boost Energy Savings and Swine Performance

Read time: 2 min

LED Lighting System

A study from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) highlights the benefits of efficient lighting systems. They boost energy savings and swine performance. The research emphasizes the potential for energy savings, improved animal welfare, and increased productivity when upgrading to modern lighting technologies, mainly LED fixtures.

Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings

Lighting accounts for a small portion of overall energy consumption in swine production, but efficient systems can significantly reduce energy use and maintenance costs. By choosing energy-saving lights such as T8 fluorescents or LEDs, producers can achieve up to 85% savings compared to outdated incandescent systems. IHT LED lights, in particular, outperform traditional systems by offering up to 20% higher luminous efficacy and an extended lifespan, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

Improved Animal Welfare

Proper lighting also contributes to pigs’ well-being, a critical component of successful swine farming. The study recommends specific light levels and photoperiods depending on the facility’s function, whether breeding, farrowing, or finishing. For example, breeding areas require 100-150 lux of light for 14-16 hours per day to support estrus cycling, while farrowing areas benefit from 50-150 lux to promote piglet suckling and encourage maternal behaviours.

Swine facilities must also provide periods of darkness to prevent overstimulation and stress. Excessively bright lights can lead to weight loss and behavioural issues, so proper lighting control is essential for fostering a healthy environment.

LEDs Outperform T8 Fluorescents

While T8 fluorescents and LEDs are popular choices in swine barns, LEDs are superior due to their durability, higher efficiency, and directionality. LEDs direct light where needed most, unlike fluorescent bulbs, which waste light by emitting it in all directions. This feature improves visibility and reduces the energy required to illuminate the facility.

LED fixtures have an average lifespan of 25,000-100,000 hours, outlasting T8 bulbs, which typically last 15,000-25,000 hours. Additionally, LEDs are unaffected by the temperature extremes common in swine barns, whereas fluorescent lights can suffer reduced performance in cold or hot environments.

A Smart Investment

OMAFRA’s findings clarify that upgrading to efficient lighting systems, mainly LEDs, is an intelligent investment for swine producers. Efficient lighting systems, like IHT Lighting, boost energy savings and improve swine performance. Beyond lowering energy bills, these systems support animal welfare and reduce long-term maintenance costs, making them an integral part of modern, sustainable farming practices. As the industry increasingly focuses on efficiency and sustainability, producers can improve their bottom line while ensuring the best animal care.
